2012-2013 Summer Reading List

Sebastian Charter Junior High Summer Reading List

 

Dear Parents,

We encourage our students to have a book handy at all times.  We would like them to fill their spare time with a good book, and a great time to start reading is the summer!

We have chosen a variety of books for our reading list that all students will enjoy reading and discussing with their family.  Most of the books are available at the public library and in our area book stores.  Online resources are textbooks.com and amazon.com.

All grades are required to read two books: One set book, and one book of their choice from the following lists.

 

6th Grade Reading List

All sixth graders are required to read Acorn People  by Ron Jones.  There will be a test on this book during the first week of school.  Students are also required to read one other book from the list below, and to complete one of the listed projects.

Sebastian CharterJunior High School Summer Reading Project Directions

Dear Parents and students,

    All students are required to read 2 books this summer; one of choicefrom the summer reading list and the other has been chosen as follows.  Incoming sixth graders all read AcornPeople, seventh graders all read Where the Red Fern Grows and alleighth graders read The Call of the Wild.  The first 2 weeks of school will be dedicatedto writing book reports and taking a test on one of these 3 books depending onwhat grade students are in.

Students must complete one project onthe book of choice only.  Thisproject will be due the first week back to school.  Students may bring in the project any day ofthe first week and give it to their reading teacher.  Project choices and directions are explainedbelow.  All projects will be presentedorally to the class.

Book Project choices and directions:
(Pleasechoose one of the following!)

1.      Write a poem about the book including the characters, the setting and the plot.  The poem must be at least 16 lines long, but it does not have to rhyme.  The poem must be written on construction paper of any color and illustrations may be included if so desired.  The poem needs to be orally presented to the class.

2.      Create a Power Point presentation about the book with the title and author.  Include detailed descriptions of the setting, characters, plot, and theme. Also include your opinion of the book, whether you liked it or not and whether you would recommend it to a friend. Present the Power Point to the class.

3.      Create a diorama of a scene from the book in a shoebox.  Include the title and author of the book.  The scene must include illustrations and detailed written descriptions.  Describe characters, setting and the plot that you have chosen.  Present the diorama to the class.

4.      Imagine you are one of the main characters.  Write a diary account of daily thoughts and activities of you as this character for 2 weeks (14 days).   Write the dates and include 4-5 sentences per day.  Illustrations may be included but are optional.   Present the diary to the class.

5.      Develop a front page for a newspaper using the incidents from the story.  The page must have a title for the paper, headlines, pictures and captions, as well as stories that have to do with the book.  Be creative and use the plot, setting, characters and theme to write the news stories.  Use construction paper or a small sized poster board 12 by 18.  Orally present your newspaper to the class.
